CLUB STORY

Set amongst the rolling hills of rural England with views of the Atlantic, and just a few miles from the quintessentially British village of Oakhampton St Mary, sits the secluded and multi-award winning The Devil’s Back golf club.

A deliberately exclusive club, so named because of its hidden and almost mythical location away from prying eyes and with a membership originally formed by some of the most prominent, but private, ladies and gentlemen in Britain - it is one of the most sort after memberships of the modern era.

Created on the site an old Manor House and its linked heathland, previously owned by the flamboyant 6th Earl of Hamblewick, Thomas Flane. This was, and still is, a membership that was as much about ones standing in society as it was to join this beautifully curated and maintained club, there are tales still told of extravagant parties with attendance from European Royalty, long term residences from scoundrels evading the law and the creation of some of the most iconic (and potent) cocktails.

THE COURSE

This place's beauty is reserved for only those who are ‘allowed’ to see it...

As one of the course architects commented back in 1843 when creating our award winning course “this place is so wild, remote and away from external view that even the Devil himself couldn’t find it. It’s like it's hidden behind him at all times”. And so the name, The Devil’s Back, was born.

Famed course architect, Arthur Dewitney, was so inspired by the area and name that he took it as the core of everything he created - producing the first, and oldest continuously operating 6-6-6 course in Great Britain. 6 tricky Par 3s, 6 beautifully set out and challenging Par 4s and 6 devilishly difficult Par 5s.
